So why does Eleanor design orthopedic footwear?
One might ask “ why turn your energy to diabetic footwear?” Eleanor says “to me it's very personal. I was diagnosed Diabetic two years ago… I take my medical condition seriously. I eat the right foods and exercise … and I am determined to inspire others about the importance of taking care of themselves. So, if I can accomplish this by designing ‘ new age orthopedic shoes' – then it is important that I do just that!”
Who is Eleanor Leinen?
ELEANOR LEINEN considers herself a renaissance woman raised by a renaissance mom. Born and reared in Queens , New York City, her mother was a premier hostess who paid particular attention to every detail of entertaining…and was a very avant - garde thinker in her approach to fashion aesthetics, art and decorating. Eleanor's dad spoke five languages and was an international business consultant. When he returned home from his many trips bearing exotic gifts , Eleanor was enamored by the combinations of colors , textures, prints and materials used by the people of foreign ports. She attributes this early exposure to the art world and a two- year internship with the museum of natural history to her deep appreciation of cultures and their artifacts. As an art student, Eleanor was intrigued by the works of Magritte, Warhol ,various French impressionists and North African rug weavers.
She served as Director of Special Projects & Events for New York City 's former mayor David Dinkins' and was co-owner of a unique gift boutique – THE INSIDE GALLERY. Eleanor has been featured numerous times on NBC AND FOX TV and THE DO IT YOURSELF NETWORK. In addition , her career achievements have been featured in THE NEW YORK TIMES , THE BERGEN RECORD , NEW YORK POST , INNERCITY , HAIRSTYLE and ROLLING OUT URBAN STYLE WEEKLY. Eleanor is a creative entrepreneur who seems to have no boundaries. She is an instructor at the world-renown Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), and had her first exhibit featuring her unique style of gift wrapping ‘THE ORIGINAL WRAPPER' at friend Chris Noth's (SEX & THE CITY'S – MR. BIG), CUTTING ROOM where her empty- wrapped boxes sold for $500 and up.
After this show, friends encouraged Eleanor to seek out more unique canvasses… .. and she did. Last fall, Eleanor previewed her newest creations – a line of one – of - kind wearable - art flip flops , mules, and slides called ELEANOR LEINEN'S FANCY FLOPS. In January 2004, the FANCY FLOPS line was formally introduced at the INDUSTRY STYLE 212 SHOW and was showcased in the show's press release and in a stand alone exhibit in the lobby of the Javitz Center in New York City . In the May 2004 issue of NAILS MAGAZINE editors choose FANCY FLOPS as a feature for the “new and hot products of the month”… and in the June 7 th issue of FOOTWEAR NEWS (FN) Kristin Larson introduced her readers to Fancy Flops as her lead story in the Women's Buzz feature. Boutiques and hotels in Alabama , Miami and New York are currently selling these unique sandals between $110 – 225.
In the Spring of 2006, Eleanor will be launching a new design which will be manufactured by a Florida based orthopedic shoe company.
