  • Is Susie Playing at a Home With Guns? (The Wall Street Journal) is a sobering article which may prompt parents to expand the range of their concerns for the safety of their children.
  • National Safety Council Fact Sheets on Child Safety include topics from baby-proofing your home, to drownings and home falls.
Child Care
  • National Child Care Information Center includes information on the Healthy Child Care America Campaign, the National Health and Safety Performance Standards for Out-of-Home Child Care Programs, and how to throw a "baby safety" shower.
  • National Resource Center for Health and Safety in Child Care promotes health and safety in out-of-home child care facilities throughout the nation. Information on this site includes the National Standards, state regulations (including Indiana), an extensive set of information links on child safety topics, practical child-care safety tips, and a search engine.

Environmental Safety

  • Protecting Our Children (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) contains a report on Environmental Health Threats to Children; information resources on air and water quality, toxins and poisons, and protection from the sun; and some tips to reduce the effects of these environmental hazards on children.
Health
  • American Academy of Pediatrics provides information on The Injury Prevention Program, car safety, sudden infant death syndrome, and immunizations. Users may access these and other topics by clicking on "You and Your Family".
Internet Safety
  • Child Safety on the Internet (Indianapolis Online) features an informative article on Internet safety, useful safety tips, and links to other Internet-safety sites.
Passenger Safety
  • Bicycle Helmets for Children (Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute) contains detailed information about safety helmets for children of various ages, safety seats, and trailers.
  • Child Passenger Safety (NHTSA) includes a set of information resources and recommendations for safely transporting children in cars. It provides a listing of recalled child safety seats.
  • Car Safety Seats: A Guide for Families 2003 (American Academy of Pediatrics) is a comprehensive child safety seat guide.
  • Why Child Safety Seats? (National Safety Council) outlines the rationale for using child safety seats and provides useful information for parents, including frequently asked questions on child passenger safety.

  • Indiana Missing Children Clearinghouse (Indiana State Police) is the state's central repository for all information on missing children from Indiana, or believed to be in Indiana. It includes biographical information, photographs, and hotline numbers.

  • Indiana Poison Center has important information on poison awareness, including a Home Safety Poison Checklist; a toll-free telephone number and information about what to do in an emergency; a guide to poisonous and non-poisonous plants; and information about insect bites and stings.
  • How To Prevent Poisonings in Your Home (National Safety Council) is a fact sheet that offers room-by-room tips on poison prevention.
  • National Lead Information Center is a site that contains a newsletter, an Indiana point of contact, extensive sources of information and links on lead poisoning, a virtual library, and various alerts.
Product Safety
  • Consumer Product safety Commission offers extensive child product safety information, including product recalls, and features a special site for children to learn about product safety.
Recreational Safety
  • National Program for Playground Safety furnishes revealing injury statistics, a parent's "quick checklist", and other safety information resources, including the National Action Plan.
  • Play With Safety: Boston Globe Safety in Youth Sports Campaign provides an online pamphlet that includes information about preparation for sports--including questions for parents to ask, sporting gear, on-field safety, and sports injuries.
School Safety
  • Indiana School Safety Specialist Academy This site contains a wealth of Indiana-based school safety resources, including school safety and the law, history, and program development resources.
  • Early Warning, Timely Response: A Guide To Safe Schools (U.S. Department of Education and U.S. Department of Justice) offers research-based practices designed to assist school communities identify early warning signs and develop prevention, intervention, and crisis response plans. The site offers this important document in PDF and HTML formats.
  • Keep Schools Safe (National Association of Attorneys General and National School Boards Association) is a site devoted to finding solutions to the pressing social problem of youth violence which afflicts communities everywhere. It contains a mission statement, basic features of safe school plans, case studies, what parents need to know, and other pertinent information resources.
  • National School Safety Center is a non-profit organization created to meet the growing need for additional training and preparation in the area of school crime and violence prevention. Its mission is to promote safe schools, so learning can be the focus of attention. The Latest News section offers recommendations for decreasing school violence, and there are numerous surveys and reports on school violence and crime in the Statistics section.   • Safe and Drug Free Schools Program (U.S. Department of Education) has extensive information resources on school safety. They include news updates, information about programs and research, and links to related sites on the WWW.
  • Violence and Discipline Problems in U.S. Public Schools: 1996-97 (National Center for Education Statistics) is a report that places school violence in a broader perspective. It discusses the numbers of specific crimes occurring in schools, principals' perceptions about the seriousness of disciplinary issues, disciplinary actions taken against students, and security measures and prevention programs that exist in public schools.
Substance Abuse
  • Indiana Prevention Resource Center contains statistical information about substance abuse, legislative summaries and news, information about prevention services, and a variety of publications and reference materials.
